After 16 years apart, Kathleen and Matthew were recently reunited. On September 2, Matthew called his mom from the Bakersfield bus depot telling her he had been suddenly released from prison. It was an answer to many years of prayers! Since then, Kathleen, with the support of family and friends, has been helping Matthew readjust to life outside. While his return has been joyful, the sudden change has also been challenging for both of them. Many programs to help with re-entry are inadequate or not suited for him, and the more promising ones are expensive. Most importantly, after years of poor healthcare, he has significant health issues that need to be addressed before he can succeed in a job-training program. He also needs housing immediately. His current living situation is temporary and unsafe. Matthew is full of compassion for others. It breaks his heart to see how the world has changed since he's been away. Though his own current living situation is insecure, he feels deeply for those who are without shelter. It's going to take time to get Matthew on a healthy footing, and the challenges are significant. However, with the help of family and friends and community, we hope this fund can help Matthew secure safe housing and good healthcare. Once he's in a healthier place, he can find a new purpose for his life. Please give as you can - prayers are most welcome, too. We appreciate your support.
