My name is Terry, retired, from Washington DC. My mission is to help an Afghan family of six(6)- The Abdul JabarQadiri Family. No realtion..just a friend,
Picture this - you are sleeping and someone wakes you up and tells you to gather your family and each pack one bag. You are leaving the country in 4 hours!
This is what happened to a friend of mine, Abdul Jabar who worked at the American compound in Kabul, Afghanistan for 12 years, the past 6 years as an interpreter of four (4) languages.
His Story
Jabar was sleeping in the compound when his commander woke him early one morning in August 2021. He was told the Taliban has taken over the city of Kabul. He was to get his family to the compound because they were leaving the country in 4 hours. It was too dangerous to stay behind.
Jabar was able to get his wife, mother, sister and nephew safely to the compound carrying one bag a piece.
Their Journey
Their journey began with the US plane taking them to Saudi Arabia for several days, and then off to Spain for several nights. They then flew to Washington DC and took a bus to Virginia where they were taken to the Dulles airport and flown to Indiana where all the refugees were processed after 4 1/2 months.
With the paperwork complete, they were transferred back to Washington DC and were in a hotel room in Silver Spring, Maryland for 2 1/2 months before Jabar and his family were moved to a housing development in Riverdale, Maryland through Lutheran Social Services. Months later, they transferred to Fort Worth Texas where they were told employment opportunities were abundant. Living all this time with only their bags, a few belongings and a new 3-month-old son.
Sadly, this turned out not to be true and is now being relocated to Northern Virginia. My dear friend,
(I think you know her!), Sue Hamblen, Director of Missions at Vienna Presbyterian Church has taken Jabar’s family under her wing and will be obtaining housing and furniture for his family. Her team of volunteers will be helping Jabar’s family with his Green Card application and asylum for his mother, sister, and nephew.
My Mission
Jabar is a proud man who is not only grateful but content with what he has. He worries about being a burden or intrusive. He is working, but starting a new life in a new country is overwhelming. What a journey this has been for him and his family! It has become my latest adventure to have Jabar and his family on this leg of their journey and I’m asking you to join me as I try to raise the money to buy Jabar a full-size bed and three (3) single beds, pillows and sheets and a computer and printer, which would make filling out the green card and asylum 24-page application possible.
I appreciate in advance any amount you could provide.
The need is great!
It is the least we can do to show our appreciation to Jabar for the work and commitment he made to the United States in Kabul.
Thank You and God Bless.
