We’re raising funds to get food and core essentials to tribal families in South India who have been desperately affected by Covid-19. Just £8.22 will provide enough for a family for 20 days. This is for basic food packages, not luxury items. Please help with whatever you can.
Since lockdown many of these families have been unable to work or access basic provisions. This is why they need our help :
- No public transport from isolated tribal areas to get to jobs out of their area.
- Some people are walking up to 14km to get what little work is available
- Many textile mills, garment factories and other employers have temporarily closed with no furlough scheme
- There is no transport to trade the farmed fruit and honey some sell as their livelihood
- The day centres which previously provided food and nutritional supplements for children pregnant women and new mothers have closed down.
- There is no public transport for them to get to towns to access some of the essential supplies that they need
The Island Trust, which has been working in the Nilgiri area of Tamil Nadu for 35 years will distribute these essentials direct to the villages and families particularly women and children who need them most. The packages costing only £8.22 will keep a family fed for 20 days with basic items like flour, chickpeas, oil and soya. Donations will be transferred via TAMWED .
The trust has identified 550 tribal families in need in this beautiful but remote area near Ooty. If we meet our target we can help all of them. We know that things are hard for many here in the UK in these incredibly difficult times but if you can spare just £8 or more for basic nutrition for these families we would be so grateful.
UPDATE : Thank you all so much for the amazing support. We reached the target in less than one day so I'm increasing it to see if we can get close to helping ALL of the 550 families identified. Whatever we get to, it's already an incredible effort and the Island Trust are very grateful for your kind support. Thank you!
