Helping LGBTQ Youth

While I am very fortunate to have a supportive family, the majority of kids like me are not. No one likes to imagine getting kicked out, having to run away or getting aged out of foster care just because they tried to express who I am, but for many people that is their reality.

I know we all like to say ‘Canada is so progressive!’ and while we are known for being polite, that does not excuse anyone from their faults. It is true that Canada is more progressive than other places (it is still illegal to be gay in 73 countries) there is still racism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism and xenophobia in abundance. LGBTQ+ people experience this in all most every homeless shelter, either by discrimination or simply being turned away. The Covenant House can help with this. There are 59 beds for LGBTQ+ kids to stay in as part of their short-term Residential Crisis Program. This money will go towards that program.

While the LGBTQ+ community makes up less than 7% of the population of Canada, 25% to 40% of all homeless youth are LGBTQ+.
