IVF for Baby Hough

Many of you know how much Eric and I truly long to be granted the gift of children and the opportunity to become parents.  It is an opportunity we have both desired for  many years, and we both feel called to do.  Eric and I have been actively trying for 13 months now to conceive.  We just recently went through a failed round of IVF.  We made it through all of the process: the stimulation, the egg retrieval and fertilization, and the embryo transfer on day 5.  Unfortunately our two week wait ended on Valentine's day with the devasting news that this round was unsuccessful.  After consulting with our physician we have decided to go ahead and brave another round of this.  We are told that the first 3 rounds of IVF for a woman my age (33) are equal in probability (55%).  We have both pursued acupunture as a method with which we intend to improve our odds.

Here is a breif history of our process to arriving at IVF as our option: After some frustration from a process that is supposed to be joyful and fun, we decided to seek out medical help.  We did some research and began with our regular OB/GYN.  She was helpful and took the initial steps and tried a couple of techniques with us (namely a few rounds of Clomid), but still no luck. In August, we decided to enlist the help of some local doctors that are world renowned for their breakthroughs in fertility.  The doctors at Texas Fertility Center helped us with diagnostics.  We have been told that we both have parameters out of our control that are holding us back from natural conception.  After doing our best to treat these issues, we have recently run diagnostics again and have been met with the news that IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) is our only option for conception.  My issues include coiled Fallopian tube scarring from my appendix rupture in 2004.  I had no idea that it was a possible side effect and to be told about the damage ten years after what was an awful procedure was absoltuely heart-breaking.   Eric has low motility sperm on top of his low sperm count.  Our combination, we have been told by medical professionals, gives us virtually zero chance of natural conception. Our doctors have recommended IVF for our circumstances.

The IVF cost of our first round was around $15,000 (including the simulation medications) on top of what we have already spent to find these diagnoses.  Fertility expense is virtually uncovered by my health insurance. With the cost being out of our range of income and with our increasing age as a factor in our case, we have decided to enlist the help of friends and family.  We realize that this is not your burden to bear.  We also want to be clear that we know this is a voluntary procedure.  In fulfilling our dreams to have IVF help us to have a child, we do not mean to take away from any charitable donation you would make to someone in need or a worthy cause.  We know we are blessed with food, shelter, and wonderful family and friends. This being said we have been told that the probability of it happening naturally is slim to none.

We have found this is a difficult and emotional process .  We are doing our best to make a plan and be faithful that our miracle will happen.

Our first round was due mostly in part to our success with our ornament envelope fundraiser; we raised nearly $9,000 through the ornaments.  We were and still remain incredibly grateful for the help that we recieved.  Finding the funds for the second round seems impossible yet again, we are doing everything in our power to try to secure the funds through varied options as well.

We implore you to help with any donation you see fit.  We will be putting these donations in a separate bank account set aside solely for the medical expenses that we will incur during this process.

Please feel free to share our story with friends and family.

Our utmost gratitude and appreciation,
Sarabeth and Eric
