In a previous chapter of my life, I spent 18 years as a high school assistant cross country and track coach. It was a role that gave me an incredible sense of purpose, especially because I got to work alongside the gentleman who once coached me: Dale Hartney, a legend in our local community. Coach Hartney never turned away any individual who wanted to join the team. During this time, we welcomed many athletes with unique challenges and disabilities to be a part of the team. I got to train with individuals who were Autistic, neurologically impaired, deaf, and other disabilities. These diverse needs presented new challenges for me; working with these athletes became one of the most rewarding parts of my career. Coach always took immense pride in how we supported these students and helped them celebrate their remarkable achievements.

Long story short, many years have passed since that time. One of my former runners, Andrew, has approached me with a request and a new challenge. Andrew ran his first marathon with me in Cleveland years ago. Recently, he has qualified for the Boston Marathon. Andrew, after completing Boston, looks to take a step back from his high level of running to spend more time focusing on his family. But before he does, he wants to bring our running journey full-circle by running the Boston Marathon together, completing the story as it had started.

When one of your former athletes makes a request like that, I cannot say no. Plus, I have been looking for a new experience and a new challenge.

As Andrew and I began brainstorming which charity we should partner with for this monumental experience, we thought about Coach Hartney, who passed away a couple years ago. These memories inspired us to find an organization that is dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities, preferably within a smaller community. This search led us to The Michael Lisnow Respite Center (503c). Their mission to provide a home away from home, emotional support, and care for individuals with disabilities and their families perfectly mirrors the spirit of Coach Hartney. Running the Boston Marathon for their organization would allow us to honor his memory while making a meaningful impact.

Many years ago, Dale Hartney took a risk by giving me the great challenge of working with students and families. I am now hoping you grant me this opportunity to benefit this great organization as Andrew and I run the Boston Marathon.
