Eric Marquez's Mission Year
Hey everyone,
I will be leaving on September 10 to embark on an epic adventure. I am going to the Jungle city of Iquitos, Peru to serve with People of Peru Project as a Student Missionary and humanitarian-aid worker from La Sierra University.
I will function in the capacity of logistics coordinator and translator for the volunteer groups, helping doctors at the medical and dental clinics, teaching children mathematics or English as a second language, lending an extra hand at the Crisis Center and filling in wherever I am need most.
People of Peru Project has a main campus located on the outskirts of Iquitos, which is about a two hour flight from Lima, the capital of Peru. POPPYS House, People of Peru Project Youth Services, it is located just outside of Iquitos and serves as a training and life skills center for girls who have been abandoned, abused or suffer from extreme poverty. There they live in a safe, nurturing environment, are fed regular nutritious meals, get a good education, and most importantly are loved.
Doing a year of service has been something I have been interested in doing since I was you. Growing up I was fortunate enough to do short term mission and humanitarian work. Going to several different countries, I was involved in medical work that made an impact in the lives of others as well as me.
The real difference is that, this entire year, I am able to integrate myself into a culture and become a part of it.
I will not only be able to help with physical ailments, but be an example that may help to shape lives and characters, that will make an eternal difference. I look forward to building friendships that will last into eternity.
Living away from home for a year, in a foreign country, has costs associated with it and I need your help. I have been working at my school job, on campus, throughout the school year. I have been able to save some money for my year abroad, but not nearly enough. I am willing to be hands and feet in service for the impoverished children of the Amazon Jungle but I can’t do it alone.
