Eric and Ami's dog Jack needs medical help!!!!

TL;DR version

Jack is very sick. We took him to the vet last week, and turns out he had developed diabetes and was in Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

His vet has been treating him in the office (so we don't have to take him to the hospital). The costs are adding up fast and we just really need help for our baby.

Longer Story

Jack is 15.5 years old. Around two months ago, he started slowing down significantly- loosing weight, not eating much, and having a hard time walking very far.

Until recently he had high energy, and was very active.

We took him to the vet, and all was well- the vet said it was just his age slowing him down, his arthritis had gotten worse and gave him meds for it.

Six weeks later he continued to decline, so we went back to the vet. During that time he lost 5 pounds (from 21 pounds pounds to 16), but his labs were still fine. They told us to keep an eye on him.

A few days later he was so frail and dehydrated, we took him back to the vet and turns out he had developed diabetes and was in Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).

The normal blood sugar for a dog of his size should have been around 120 but was elevated to 450. After two days of IV fluids and insulin, his numbers dropped but were still high.

He is at home now, but he isn't doing great, and we will bring him back to the vet in the morning, so more to come.

About Jack

We found Jack on Craigslist, the ad said 'cute white dog with a sweet face', we visited him in his Pinole back yard, he rolled on his back and showed us his tummy for rubs- and that was it.

He came to live with us in Oakland.

Jack is a well travelled. He's lived in Oakland, Nashville, and is now a Berkeley dog. He has driven cross country in a U-Haul from Oakland to Nashville (end of 2014), visited the mountains, the dessert, many beaches, and flown commercially at least 4 times. He loves a good party, and has spent a lot of time hanging out in dive bars in the Bay Area and Nashville.

He truly is a pillar of the community.

About Us

Jack is our life, we love him so much and we would do anything for him.

Ami recently made a major career pivot, completing a Medical Assistant program at SF State, and is currently doing clinicals (ie: free work), so we are primarily relying on Eric's income from the record store (Amoeba), and Ami's part time job at Maple Street Denim.
