Entire life stolen by moving company scam

Donation protected
Picking up your entire life and moving states away is hard enough with the standard hiccups. Imagine you hire a moving company to help you and then take everything you own for ransom.

My Aunt was planning on moving to South Carolina  to be closer to her grand children. She and Rick contacted a moving company and started planning the arduous task. They and the company agreed on a rate and e signed a contract and they paid a $220 deposit to reserve the truck and movers. On the day the truck arrived they needed to have $500 cash or a money order to pay the rest of the deposit and the balance of the other half would be due upon arrival in South Carolina.

The truck arrived much later in the evening than their projected early morning arrival. It was also a Pensky rental truck as the company blamed their being late on mechanical issues with their regular truck. Into the late hours,  the movers got the entire apartment contents down the two flights of stairs and packed into the truck . My Aunt and Rick gave each of the 3 men a $50 tip to thank them for moving everything down the steep stairs.  The driver locked up their items in the truck and then proceeded to let them know that they "used more room in the truck" and needed to pay more. They had less than what was shown on the pre agreed inventory list as they had put a number of items in their own vehicles. There was in reality fewer items than they had agreed upon so the cost should have been less. He informed them that they needed at least $1300 for the deposit now. My aunt told them that she did not have any more money so the driver said he would contact the dispatch and see if they could do it for less. He came back a few minutes later and said that the could do it for an additional $800. Again my Aunt informed them that all she had was the $500 money order for them until they got to South Carolina.  The driver said ok let me call the office again. So while June and Rick continued packing the last few items to go in their cars waiting for the driver to come back, he LEFT. They took off in the truck with ALL of their belongings.

Immediately they called the main number and were greeted with "Pay us what you owe or we will take your crap to the dump." My aunt had no more money. They are moving and need what money they do have for first month and last month and security at their new potential home. They are leaving New York, like many, to live a more affordable life and don't have any extra. The company refuses to return their items. Their bed, couches, TV, pots and pans, coffee machine, silverware.. Quite literally everything that you need to live and start a new life. Thankfully they did put their photographs and my grandfathers war momentous in their van, but other than that they now have nothing.  They ended up sleeping on their apartment floor on just a blanket that was left behind hoping to resolve this in the morning but that did not happen.

They needed to be out by the 1st, and now they are truly starting over, with nothing. They started their journey to South Carolina today without anything, exhausted and defeated. If you can find it in your heart to donate anything at all. A few dollars to help them settle in their new place and show them that there is hope and that there are far more good people in this world than dishonest. Thank you.
