She’s 74. A mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a lawful permanent resident who has lived in the U.S. for decades and raised generations of our family.

After a short visit to Mexico, she was stopped by CBP. They took her green card and later told her it was ready to be returned. Taking advantage of her illiteracy, they handed her a document and told her to sign it in order to get her card back. Despite our warnings not to sign anything, she trusted them.

On May 27, 2025, they detained her for 48 hours, then transferred her to a detention center in Arizona—without notifying our family.

Due to the lack of proper medical care, she has already been hospitalized. And we weren’t informed until the fifth day. ICE refused to provide any information until advocacy organizations stepped in to pressure them.

This system targets the most vulnerable—and we refuse to stay silent.

Después de un breve viaje a México, fue detenida por CBP. Le quitaron su tarjeta de residencia y luego le dijeron que ya estaba lista para ser devuelta. Aprovechándose de que no sabe leer ni escribir, le dieron un documento y le dijeron que lo firmara para recuperar su tarjeta. A pesar de que le habíamos dicho que no firmara nada, confió en ellos.
