I AM LESLIE, AND I CARE ABOUT THE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS OF CHILDREN.
As a single mother of a six-year-old girl, it is my purpose to ensure that my daughter lives a happy and healthy life. I want the same for every child. I am passionate to tackle the issue of global hunger and will fight so that Paraguayan children can enjoy the human right of eating nutritious food.
Proper nutrition is fundamental in the realization of children’s right to enjoy the highest attainable level of physical and mental health, and there continues to be a growing issue of child malnutrition globally. Imagine a world where all children live at their highest potential and at their highest levels of holistic health. This is the world I want for my 6-year-old daughter, for her children, and for all children. With your help, this vision can exist. It’s time to do something and it’s time to multiply what we have so that the world’s children cam for future generations to come.
Food and nourishment are human rights, and these rights should be upheld especially to all children on Earth. According to the United Nations, the right to food is recognized in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 2020, 6.9% (or 47 million) of children under 5 globally were affected by wasting, or acute malnutrition, and in Paraguay alone 60% of children aged 6-23 months do not meet the requirements for a minimum acceptable diet.
I am planning a trip to Paraguay and partner with one of the leading global social enterprises, Fundación Paraguaya, to advance this cause. Paraguay is one of the smallest countries in South America but is still home to more than seven million residents. Many Paraguayans residing in the landlocked region struggle to survive, with nearly 17% of the population living in poverty. The poverty rate is even higher among rural and indigenous communities. As a result, hunger in Paraguay continues to be a significant problem among children and indigenous peoples.
If a child in Latin America is born into an indigenous family, the probability of an early death, suffering from malnutrition and poverty and passing this fate on to their own children due to the lack of education and poor health is nearly twice as high as for a child born into a non-indigenous family. Additionally, if this child is an indigenous girl, her chance of growing up free from discrimination and hunger is even lower. Further, if the child is born in a rural area, the risk of becoming malnourished increases once again, perpetuating a vicious cycle.
I’m not OK with this. It’s happening here - where our children live in the US, Paraguay, and all over the world. This is needs to change.
THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN (AND GENERATIONS TO COME) ARE ON US
Our children depend on us. They depend on our collective ability to align as a global zero-hunger system to better organize, partner, and lead delivery of tangible outcomes together so that they can live happily and healthy. By immersing, educating, and connecting with global game-changing social enterprises like Fundación Paraguaya, we could learn and develop ways to make the lives of children in Paraguay better.
The goal is to disrupt the typical cycles families in poverty go through, improving their status for their children and future generations. Let’s end child malnutrition globally to reach it.
