End cancer related lymphoedema in the South West

Donation protected
Cancer is a deadly disease. It kills many people and makes others very ill. It’s a sad fact that most people know someone who has been touched by cancer if they haven’t been affected themselves.

Unlike some cancers, lymphoedema – swelling that occurs after cancer – can be prevented. This condition results from a chronic accumulation of protein rich fluid in any part of the body (limbs, trunk, breasts, genitalia, head and neck). Lymphoedema is due to an imbalance between interstitial fluid production and the transport of lymph fluids.

Moderate and severe lymphoedema has a detrimental impact on quality of life, family life, employment and economic wellbeing which is over and above the often devastating effects of cancer.

A life-threatening cancer can be replaced with a life-long condition that is both distressing and debilitating. Lymphoedema can be prevented – post treatment – in 95% of breast cancer patients if picked up early enough and before it can be seen with the naked eye.

I am an independent lymphoedema therapist (operating my own business called Riverside Massage) seeking assistance for my patients and other patients in the community.

I am raising funds to purchase a 'SOZO' Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS) to detect fluid in a limb before it can be seen with the naked eye. SOZO®, the world’s most advanced non-invasive BIS device, gives healthcare professionals a precise snapshot of fluid status and tissue composition in less than 30 seconds. Currently I use a tape measure and it takes about 15 minutes to record the measurements.

Armed with the BIS, I will commence a program of early detection and intervention which will benefit women and men in the South West of WA who are at risk. I will also undertake research in my own time and at my own expense to reinforce this need for early detection which is currently not available in this part of the country. The South West Health Campus does have chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments for cancer, but not for the detection and treatment of lymphoedema.

I would be so grateful for financial assistance to fund a SOZO. It would offer best practice to my local community and save many lymphoedema patients from needless suffering.

Ideally, I would like to make the purchase by the end of May 2021. Thank you for your consideration.
