Community Building Parenting Scheme:

My Name is Iya Martin the founder of the Community Building Parenting Scheme, my journey as a mother has profoundly influenced my understanding of community support and the critical role of parental engagement. Raising a child with special educational needs has exposed me to the complexities and emotional toll of navigating caregiving challenges. It has highlighted the necessity of understanding and supporting my child's unique needs, which is vital for their development and growth. This experience has been both a source of fear and overwhelming responsibility, often leaving me as a parent feeling isolated and at a loss. My personal experiences have equipped me with insights into how crucial it is for parents to share their needs sensitively, ensuring that children do not perceive these discussions as barriers but rather as opportunities for learning and growth.

My journey deepened with the addition of my neurodivergent granddaughter, underscoring the importance of patience and understanding in parenting. This wealth of experience emphasizes the need for comprehensive training for professionals in supporting children's learning and equipping parents with essential tools to navigate their unique challenges.

Growing up in Birmingham during the 80s, I thrived in a vibrant community rich in support, youth clubs, and play centers that offered safe havens for children. These cultural touchstones fostered unity and a sense of belonging. Despite challenges like racism and gaps in mental health support, the community spirit in which we were raised encouraged open communication and understanding. My vision is to revitalize those traditions and create a space where community love and support can thrive once more.

It is crucial to recognize the significance of respite services for parents, providing essential relief from the emotional and physical demands of caregiving. Furthermore, ensuring the inclusion of neurodivergent children in community programs allows them to flourish and access the needed support, especially since conditions like autism are often misinterpreted or overlooked.

The initiatives I have developed are deeply rooted in my lived experiences. I have designed three pilot programs aimed at supporting domestic violence survivors, mentoring youth, and addressing grief—demonstrating my commitment to meaningful change in our communities. The personal losses I have endured, including the death of my children's father and the recent passing of a close friend, have ignited a passion for building sustainable community support systems that address the concerns of families in need.

The Importance of Our Cause

Imagine a world where every child flourishes, each parent feels supported, and communities unite in a shared mission of hope and healing. The Community Building Parenting Scheme aims to actualize this vision by launching a network of community hubs across London and, ultimately, throughout the UK.

What Problems Are We Solving?

- Loneliness and Lack of Support: Many parents feel isolated and lack the knowledge and guidance they need to nurture their children effectively.

- Vulnerability Among Youth: In areas afflicted by violence, young people may succumb to gang involvement or other negative behaviors due to a shortage of support and positive role models. Our initiative aims to reduce knife crime by creating safe spaces where youth can connect, learn, and engage in creative activities, helping them envision brighter futures.

- Systemic Barriers: Parents often face challenges such as financial illiteracy, ineffective communication with their children, and a lack of understanding regarding diverse educational needs—especially those applicable to children with neurodiverse conditions. Our programs will aim to improve parent-child relationships and foster understanding of Emotional Health Care Plans (EHCPs), which are vital for accessing services and financial support.

With a target of £30 million over five years, our initiative aims to provide essential services that include parenting programs, mental health support, youth mentoring, and safe recreational spaces dedicated to fostering social and emotional growth.

Our Vision and Goals

Our operational hubs will address the under-resourced needs of families in key areas, beginning with Westminster and Brent, followed by Brixton, Lewisham, Peckham, Croydon, and beyond.

Key Services to Be Offered:
- Parenting Programs: Workshops that promote effective communication strategies and conflict resolution skills, with tailored support for single fathers and male caregivers.

- Youth Mentorship: Safe spaces and guidance for at-risk youth, helping them build resilience and confidence while diverting them from street life.

- Mental Health Support: Psychological services catering to the emotional needs of parents and children, fostering emotional openness and healthy discussions around mental health and wellness.

- Healthy Living Initiatives: Family-oriented cooking classes, fitness clubs, and community events designed to promote holistic well-being.

- Advocacy Services: Assisting parents and young people in realizing their potential and giving a voice to those who feel silenced.

Community Building Parenting recognizes and seeks to bridge critical gaps in service provision for youth, including limited parenting programs and training for educators in understanding neurodiversity. Our goal is to create a nurturing environment for families, reducing neglect and promoting well-being across the board.

Five-Year Plan Highlights

Year 1: Launch an online support platform with evening parenting programs to accommodate parents who may struggle to attend daytime sessions due to work or caregiving responsibilities. Partnerships with local schools, PRUs, and charities like NSPCC and Refuge will also be initiated.

Year 2: Open our first community hub in Westminster, implementing programs and assessing community needs based on feedback. These hubs will serve as a primary base for parents to seek advice and training while providing children with a safe haven.

Year 3: Expand facilities into South London, tailoring services to local demographics. Focus will shift toward motivational workshops empowering parents to run programs and support groups for children experiencing domestic abuse.

Year 4: Refine programs based on metrics and community assessments, enhancing service delivery.

Year 5: Establish a self-sustaining model through secured funding and ongoing partnerships, bringing our hubs to additional parts of the UK.
