I’m Lindsay Gary, a graduate student from Houston, Texas. A few months ago, I decided to join forces with some friends of mine (Eran Richard, Shadana Chaney, Kelechi Onyejiaka, and Vivian Asonye) to organize a service trip to Haiti.

Why Haiti? Haiti has continuously exemplified strength and resiliency in the face of tragedy. Due to economic exploitation and natural disasters however, the country has been depicted quite negatively and many residents live in poverty. Our goal is to show the beauty and power of Haiti and to continue to empower our brothers and sisters through service. We not only want to serve as positive ambassadors for this beautiful country but also make a long-term impact through our reforestation efforts with Sadhana Forest.

Sadhana Forest Haiti is a volunteer-based project aiming to create long-term food security for the area of Anse-à-Pitres, in Southeastern Haiti. From May 16-23, 2015, we will be planting indigenous food-growing trees with the local population. Although our trip is a week long, our work will develop highly sustainable and long-term impact for the people of Anse-à-Pitres. In addition to our work with Sadhana Forest, we will also spend our down time immersing ourselves in the Haitian culture. We are already taking Haitian Creole lessons and plan to improve our skills while there to develop strong relationships with our brothers and sisters as this will be the first of many trips to Haiti.

Your generous contribution will enable Shadana, Eran, Vivian, Kelechi, and me to travel to Anse-à-Pitres and begin our long-term reforestation efforts.
