My name is Donovan, and I am currently a student at North Carolina State University, pursuing my bachelor’s degree in international studies with a concentration in Global Development.

At the end of 2022, I had the privilege of serving in The Gambia as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Agriculture and Environment. I was placed in a rural community in the Central River Region, where I lived, learned, and worked alongside the people of Njie Kunda for nearly 3 years. During my time there, I grew to love the community deeply, and I now proudly call it my second home.

Since completing my service, I have continued working closely with Njie Kunda as an advisor to the Village Development Committee (VDC). Together, we have written a Village Development Plan that outlines impactful projects for the coming years—projects that focus on infrastructure, youth engagement, and community well-being. With the help of crowdfunding and generous supporters like you, we hope to bring these plans to life.

First Project

While there are many important initiatives in the plan, one that holds a special place in the hearts of the community is the Annual District Football Tournament hosted by Njie Kunda. This event is the most anticipated sporting and cultural gathering of the year, bringing together young people and families from Njie Kunda and surrounding villages.

Unfortunately, in recent years it has become increasingly difficult to secure the funds needed to sustain the tournament. With financial management challenges and limited resources, the VDC has not been able to provide the necessary support. That is why we are turning to you for help.

Why It Matters

This tournament is more than just a football competition—it is a celebration of youth, community, and hope. It:

• Empowers the youth by giving them opportunities to showcase their talent, build confidence, and learn teamwork and discipline.

• Promotes unity by bringing together multiple villages, strengthening bonds across communities in the district.

• Creates joy and inspiration in a region where recreational opportunities are limited, providing a positive outlet for energy and ambition.

• Encourages healthy lifestyles through sports, while also reducing the risk of youth falling into harmful activities due to lack of engagement.

For many young people, the annual tournament is the highlight of the year—something they train for, dream about, and carry with them as motivation in their daily lives. Supporting this event means investing in the next generation of leaders, athletes, and changemakers in The Gambia.
