My name is Kieron Sargeant, Founder of The Kieron Dwayne Sargeant Foundation TT, an organization committed to empowering emerging artists and preserving the cultural dance heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.
Today, I am asking for your support to help sustain and expand the “Reviving the Flame: Limbo Dance Training Program” led by renowned limbo practitioner and educator Ms. Makeba Gabriel.
Limbo is one of Trinidad and Tobago's most iconic cultural traditions and one of our most recognized contributions to the world. Emerging from African -Trinidadian communities, the dance is deeply connected to themes of resilience, survival, and transformation. Historically, limbo was performed at wakes and community gatherings, symbolizing the journey from hardship to renewal. Through the pioneering work of cultural visionaries such as Julia Edwards, Nydia Byron limbo evolved into an internationally celebrated performance art that showcased the creativity and spirit of the Caribbean.
Despite its global significance, structured limbo training has nearly disappeared over the past twenty years, placing valuable cultural knowledge, performance practices, and traditions at risk of being lost.
Your donation will provide scholarships for young dancers who otherwise could not afford to participate, while also supporting instructor fees and safe training facilities. Through professional training, mentorship, cultural education, and performance opportunities, participants will gain the skills, discipline, and cultural understanding needed to carry this tradition forward.
By investing in this program, you are helping to preserve an important part of Trinidad and Tobago's cultural identity, empower the next generation of artists, and ensure that the legacy of limbo continues to thrive both locally and internationally.
Together, we can keep the flame alive.
Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference. Thank you for supporting the future of Limbo dance.
