Empower the Future of Noxubee County

Tax deductible
The Noxubee County Historical Society (NCHS), established in 1967, is on a mission to gather, preserve, and share the history of Noxubee County. Our motto is “Preserving the Past to Empower the Future.”

As we go forward, our goal is to achieve greater awareness of the history of Noxubee County and the work of our Society. We work aggressively to improve diversity, increase membership, and encourage community involvement. We own a Macon Welcome Center, maintain a genealogy research room at the Noxubee County Library and collaborate with many community entities.

Future plans include community murals; signage at historic locations; photo exhibition at Noxubee courthouse; interpretive garden next to our Welcome Center; and a museum to house artifacts collected over decades.

In the past year, we successfully obtained grants from AARP, 4-County Electric Foundation, MS Humanities Council, MS Digital Library, and MS Hills Heritage Area Alliance. These grants support archival records preservation, oral history collection and other community projects.

To fulfill requirements for grants already received as well as to position ourselves for future grants, we need money to establish a “working fund” that provides “front money” for grants that pay by reimbursement once a project is finished and “matching funds” for grants we apply for. These grants require more than we have in our coffers. Our sole source of stable income is membership dues, which amount to $3,175 thus far in 2023.

Our GoFundMe goal is $25,000. This will satisfy our immediate needs and carry us through to Spring 2024, when we plan to mount a “Capital Campaign” to build a museum and a “Legacy Fund” endowment to take us into the future.

We have never done a campaign like this before and it is with humility that we come to you now. If every NCHS member (139 total) contributes $100, we would have a working fund of $13,900. If you contribute more, that would be even better.

You can contribute via GoFundMe (click link below) or send a check to Noxubee County Historical Society, PO Box 892, Macon, MS 39341. We are a 501(c)3 organization, so all donations are tax deductible.
