Hello, Daviess County residents! My name is Laquan Jackson Kendall. I was born and raised in Owensboro, KY. I am still a resident of Owensboro♡

The Owensboro Public Library was hands down one of the most important parts of my family, finding resources, and being a part of the community, as well as many other families over the years.

Unfortunately, recently, the Owensboro Public Library was forced to remove a a book at the request of a parent.

The book is titled, "The Girl Guide" by Marawa Ibrahim.

Synopsis of "The Girl Guide":

The book aims to empower young girls during their journey to womanhood, addressing the physical and emotional changes of puberty with practical tips and relatable stories.

It covers topics ranging from periods and body hair to crushes and new emotions, encouraging girls to embrace their bodies and celebrate their individuality.

The book is designed to be a supportive resource, helping girls feel less alone and more confident as they navigate the challenges and joys of growing up.

As a formal Social work warrior, I can personally attest there are a lot of young girls in our area who do not have the guidance or resources to understand what is happening to them, their body, and their emotions during puberty.

My goal is to purchase as many of these books as I can and donate them to Girls Incorporated and New Beginnings Sexual Assault Support Services for them to give young girls with permission from their parent/guardian.

If we raise a ton of money, hence the $4,000 goal, I will donate on behalf of the community equally to Girls Incorporated, New Beginnings Sexual Support Services, and the Owensboro Public Library.

We are the people♡ We have the power to change the trajectory of our community and the future of our youth.
