Help Us Support Kids Living with Type 1 Diabetes
Hi, I’m Kim and when I was 11 years old, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
I remember how overwhelming it was… learning how to take shots, count carbs, check blood sugar, and just trying to keep up with regular life at the same time. It was hard, not just for me, but for my whole family. We had to figure it out together and honestly, we felt alone a lot of the time.
Ever since then, I’ve carried this deep desire to give back. To create something that would help other kids and families feel supported, informed, and not so alone in their journey with type 1.
That desire is part of what led me to become a nurse. I wanted to care for others the way I wished someone had cared for me when I was first diagnosed. And while nursing has given me the chance to make a difference in people’s lives, deep down, I’ve always felt like it wasn’t quite enough.
I’ve always known there was something more I was meant to build, something that could directly support children and families facing the same challenges I faced. That “something” is this nonprofit.
Why I’m Starting This Nonprofit -
I’m in the process of starting a nonprofit that’s all about supporting children and families affected by type 1 diabetes.
Our mission is simple and personal. To empower kids and families through education, emotional support, and community connections, giving them the tools, confidence, and encouragement they need to thrive and live full, healthy lives.
We’ll be offering things like easy-to-understand health education, peer and parent support groups, events and programs where kids can connect with others just like them, and free or low-cost resources to help families navigate life with type 1.
No one should have to face this diagnosis alone, especially not a child.
Our Purpose -
This organization will be organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Our purpose is to support children and adolescents living with type 1 diabetes by offering health education programs, peer and family support, awareness initiatives, and resources to promote disease management and emotional well-being.
All services will be provided without charge or at a reduced cost to ensure accessibility, regardless of a family’s income or background.
Where We Are in the Process -
Right now, I’ve started the paperwork to legally form the nonprofit and will be applying for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. That means we’re still in the early stages, but I didn’t want to wait to get the word out and start building support.
Starting a nonprofit takes a lot behind the scenes, legal filings, program planning, website development, community outreach, and I can’t do it without a little help.
How You Can Help -
I’m raising funds to cover the early costs of getting this nonprofit off the ground. Your donation will go toward things like filing fees with the IRS and state, creating educational and support materials, building a website and outreach platform, and laying the foundation for our first programs and events.
Just a Heads-Up -
We haven’t received our 501(c)(3) approval yet, so donations right now aren’t tax-deductible, but we’ve started the process and expect to file within the IRS timeline that allows for donations to become retroactively deductible if approved. I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated as we go.
If you or someone you love has lived with type 1 diabetes, you know how important support can be especially in those early days. My hope is to build something that gives kids and their families the kind of support I wish we had.
Thank you for reading, for believing in this dream, and for helping make it real. Every dollar and every share make a difference.
With so much love and gratitude,
Kim
