Empower her future!
Period Poverty is a global issue with an estimated 500 million women lacking access to menstrual products and adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management (The World Bank, 2022). In Zambia, tens of thousands of girls miss school simply because they face challenges accessing menstrual products, menstrual education, and period-friendly facilities. This hinders their education and self-confidence and limits their ability to reach their full potential.
Girls in remote areas often resort to using torn strips of fabric or scrap paper during their periods, increasing the risk of infection and pain. Beliefs and traditions around menstruation differ culturally between tribes and regions across Zambia. But many girls associate their periods with shame and isolation from their families and the community. Some girls are in school for three weeks and out for a week. You can imagine the long-term impact on their education and self-confidence.
At Baobuyu Learning Center in Livingstone, Zambia, we're tackling period poverty head-on. With our third annual Reusable Pad Campaign, we hope to empower 250 more girls to stay in school and feel comfortable and confident. Over the last 3 years, we have worked with communities in need to provide workshops and pads, promoting sustainability and hygiene.
Through our Reusable Pad Campaign 2024, we aim to provide 250 girls with 10 reusable pads each along with essential puberty and hygiene workshops. These pads are made by our Women’s Sewing Circle, initiating a cycle of female empowerment.
For just $10, you can provide a girl with 10 pads and give her the confidence to stay in school. Help us empower her future and change lives today!
