From the Classroom to Costa Rica: My Heart’s Mission to Heal

Hello, my name is Gillian Trover, and I’m currently a nursing student at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville pursuing a dream that’s rooted in purpose, compassion, and service. Nursing isn’t just a career for me—it’s a calling. Ever since I can remember, I’ve felt a deep pull to care for others, advocate for those without a voice, and bring healing not only through medicine, but through presence, empathy, and human connection.

I’ve recently been blessed with an opportunity that perfectly aligns with everything I believe in: a medical mission trip to Costa Rica through my School of Nursing my senior year. This journey isn’t just about gaining clinical experience—it’s about stepping outside of my comfort zone to serve communities in real need, and to carry the heart of nursing across the country.

✈️ What This Trip Is About

In Costa Rica, I’ll be working alongside fellow nursing students and healthcare professionals to provide basic medical care, health education, and emotional support to individuals and families living in underserved areas. Many of the people we’ll be helping lack regular access to healthcare—some have never seen a nurse or doctor in their lifetime.

This trip will allow me to:

️ Treat and assist individuals with limited healthcare options

Teach basic health practices that can improve long-term wellness

Offer care with dignity to people who are often overlooked

Learn cultural humility and grow into a better, more compassionate nurse

Strengthen my purpose through hands-on service to others

This is more than just a trip—it’s an opportunity to pour my heart into what I love while helping others who truly need it. The experience I gain will also directly enhance the kind of nurse I become in the future.

Why I’m Fundraising

The total cost of the trip is $3,625, which includes:

Lodging & meals

Program fees & travel insurance

As a full-time student, covering this cost on my own isn’t possible. I’ve worked hard to contribute what I can, but I’m asking for help from anyone who is able and willing to support this mission with me. Your generosity will not only help me reach Costa Rica—it will allow me to serve others with dignity, grace, and love.

If I Don’t Reach My Goal…

If I’m unable to raise the full amount or cannot make up the difference out of pocket, any donations I receive will be used responsibly—either to:

Help cover part of the trip cost if I’m able to pay the rest myself

Or be redirected to my nursing school tuition, continuing to support my education and long-term mission of becoming a skilled, compassionate nurse

Either way, your support is never wasted—you’ll be investing directly in a future nurse who is committed to making a difference in people’s lives both locally and globally.
