There are many current events causing extra stress on individuals and communities that feel more at risk than they may have been just a few short months ago.
Our local support group in Southern California would like to help, one person at a time, feel as if they have more agency by helping them get a passport. This may help them vote if voting becomes restricted, have a solid form of identification, move around the world more freely, or in a dire emergency, seek refuge.
We are starting with the most at risk in our group and will keep going until all the at-risk individuals who wish for a passport in our group have one. Then, if possible, we will work to get others in the community their passports. We will also have a buddy system to help fill out forms and attend the application process for those who feel particularly intimidated.
Our small group is trying to figure out what we can do on a large scale to help the world, our society, and our community. We're doing what we can to help others and support the causes that matter to us. Sometimes it feels overwhelming and disheartening. When making a difference feels impossible, starting small and looking at doing something good for one person is a good place to start. So that is what we are doing.
Our starting goal is low at only $500, but that will cover the cost of three people getting their US Passports. We will keep the list of the recipients private, but if they wish, we will share their stories and what it means to them.
Update- We currently have 6 people on our list and have updated our goal to meet the list and are nearly there! We have started the process, with several getting their photos, and a group application appointment made. If you are at risk and need your passport we CAN and WILL put you our list and reopen the goal of this fundraiser.
