When I asked Bernice what she wanted let people know about her story, she said, "My story is just that I am trying to keep a roof over my head, I do not know what to say."
What I want to let you know about Bernice is that she is a loving mother and caregiver. She has one son finishing his degree at Yale. Her husband passed away several years ago from cancer. When she works with a child she loves them whole-heartedly. When she works with a child who has sensory differences, she learns about OT activities, when she works with a child with hearing loss, she learns American Sign Language. Bernice meets the child where they are.
What I want to let you know about this country is that childcare givers have been ghosted. The people responsible for not only early childhood development (arguably the most important time in a person's life), but also for making it possible for parents to go to work have been ghosted. With no access to unemployment or pandemic assistance, the bottom is quite literally dropping out.
For single mothers on one income living pay check to paycheck they are one month away from being homeless.
$5000 will cover 3 months rent for Bernice so that her and her son can continue to got to school and try and find work.
