My name is Mohammed Asfour, and I am a paracyclist from Gaza now living in Belgium after receiving asylum. I was evacuated from Gaza with the hope of competing internationally, and since then I have built a life in Belgium, representing Palestine on the world stage. I am also a proud member of the Gaza Sunbirds, a team of paracyclists who have been delivering aid since October 2023. Despite these achievements, my heart remains with my family in Gaza.
Many of my relatives have been killed during this genocide. Recently, my 12-year-old brother Adam Asfour was critically injured when he was shot in the arm by an Israeli battle tank, nearly losing his arm. At first, I was told he had died. I received this devastating news just before one of my World Championship races. Later, I learned that Adam had survived, but he was severely injured and now faces the possibility of amputation. Adam is currently in the hospital constantly, undergoing painful surgeries and treatments without anesthesia due to severe shortages of medical supplies in Gaza.
My family is displaced and struggling to survive, facing constant shortages and inflation in the cost of food, water, and medicine. The most urgent need is to support Adam’s medical evacuation so he can receive the care he needs and avoid a life-changing amputation.
This is a common reality for amputees in Gaza—suffering more severe outcomes simply because they cannot access timely treatment. Funds from this fundraiser will go directly to my European bank account and will then transfer the funds directly to my family in Gaza. We are actively exploring every possible pathway for Adam’s medical evacuation, pulling every string we can through the international contacts I’ve built as a global athlete and asylum seeker in Belgium.
Until evacuation is possible, funds will cover Adam’s ongoing hospital costs inside Gaza, as well as basic survival needs for my displaced family (food, water, shelter, and medicine). Any funds raised will first be used to stabilize Adam’s condition, and then toward evacuation costs once a pathway is secured.
This fundraiser will directly support:
- Medical treatment and possible evacuation for Adam
- Basic survival needs like food, shelter, and medicine for my family
Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a real difference. We are deeply grateful for your support.
