Emergency Appeal: Help Us Reach Sick Children in Remote Laos

We're making a plea today, and we thank you for taking a minute to hear us.
Lao Friends Hospital for Children's Outreach service is facing an urgent crisis reaching sick children in remote areas of Northern Laos who need life-saving treatment and medication.
Right now, we're going through our toughest rainy season in years.
As the only free healthcare provider in Laos, we are the only hope for many families here. Our Outreach Team travels an average of 3,000 km per month to reach families facing severe transportation and financial barriers.
Currently, they care for over 150 children who have been discharged but still require ongoing care.
Most of the families live in the remotest of areas, and right now they are CUT OFF from accessing healthcare because heavy rains have turned roads into deep mud and rivers too dangerous to cross.
The rainy season also brings more illnesses such as dengue, typhoid, and severe diarrhea. Sometimes, our team finds another child who needs emergency treatment and must be brought back to the hospital.
September is traditionally the wettest month, and it's still ahead. The worst of this crisis is still to be expected. We need to act and be prepared for what's to come.
We are lucky to have the right transportation to handle treacherous roads, but keeping our staff safe while reaching remote areas takes far more resources than usual.
This is why we are launching this EMERGENCY APPEAL. We need your help now to keep our Outreach Team moving.
***WHY IS IT A CRISIS and WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP?***
- Every trip needs more fuel. Navigating mud, flooding, and damaged routes.
- Our vehicles are taking a beating. Deep mud and damaged roads mean more frequent repairs and expensive maintenance
- Sometimes, even our vehicles can’t get through. We have to hire large tractors to pull them out, a necessary cost.
- Sometimes our car needs to be carried by a transportation boat.
- We need to carry more medicine. We need to bring extra stocks of essential treatments because we don’t know when we will be able to reach that village again.
- Sometimes our team can’t get home and may have to stay overnight, waiting until it is safe to travel again, adding to cost.
With your help, the Outreach Team can keep moving through one of the most challenging rainy seasons in recent years.
IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THAT NO VULNERABLE CHILDREN ARE LEFT BEHIND. When families cannot reach the hospital, we WILL take the hospital to them. Your donation goes far in Laos.

Friends Without a Border (FWAB) is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free, quality healthcare to children in Southeast Asia.
In Laos, FWAB built, operates, and fully funds Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC), the country’s only free pediatric hospital. Since opening its doors, LFHC has provided life-saving care to hundreds of thousands of children regardless of their ability to pay.
We receive no support from local government and have no single main benefactor. The hospital’s doors remain open because of the generosity of people around the world who believe that every child deserves access to healthcare. How do we keep this vital work going?
