Little Elwood Zander Grey is a recently rescued kitty who needs help with his medical expenses after being attacked by another animal.
After losing my dear cat of 20 years, Momo, in 2016, my heart took some time before it was ready to bring a new cat into my life. When that time finally came this past September, I was so happy to welcome Elwood into our home. He had a rough start in life, having spent his early days in a parking lot with his litter mates and having a ringworm infection to boot. I was ecstatic to be able to welcome him to his warm, cozy, forever home where I knew we would have a great life together.
Elwood looooves being cozy and warm with a family who loves him.
Elwood was settling in very nicely and becoming the king of our little household, when he decided to take a clandestine stroll in the outdoors world. Unfortunately, Elwood's first big trip outside did not go well. He was out for over two hours in freezing temperatures before being found. And, when we found him, he had been attacked by an animal that punctured his abdomen, bruised his lungs, and damaged his spinal cord.
Elwood is the king of this house and keeps his big sister in line.
We rushed Elwood to the Boulder Emergency Pet Clinic immediately, and the incredible staff there was able to rescue him from death's door. He was too cold to even get a temperature or blood pressure, and his other vitals were in a near-flatline state. But, the staff worked diligently overnight to stabilize him so that I could pick him up in the morning to transfer him to the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Elwood's a fighter. I know he can make it through this!
After an extensive examination, the doctors at CSU have identified three primary concerns as they treat Elwood:
1. Pulmonary damage: Elwood has bruising and blood on his lungs. This is the most immediate concern they’re fighting at the moment.
2. Abdominal punctures: Once Elwood's breathing has stabilized, they'll be able to further explore his puncture wounds. The good news is that there doesn’t appear to be any sepsis. There is some pretty bad damage, however, that will likely require surgery once he's stabilized enough to be put under anesthesia.
3. Spinal damage: Elwood is not using his hind legs. They’re hoping that it’s just spinal bruising and his hind leg function will return, but they can’t test for this until he’s more stabilized.
Elwood is now hospitalized in critical care and being monitored 24-7 to help him further stabilize. They have him in an incubating oxygen tank to help get him warm and breathing easier.
Elwood fighting so hard for his little life. Keep it up, Baby!
Elwood's trip to the Boulder Emergency Pet Clinic cost a little over $1,300. Current hospitalization estimates range from $5,300 - $7,200. Any help with his medical expenses is greatly appreciated and will go towards doing everything we can to give this little fighter a chance at the happy life he deserves.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for donating, sharing on social, and sending kind words.
Elwood says "Thank you!"for helping save his life!
