Ellis Herz Field Trial Memorial Hall of Fame
Donation protected
We are pleased to announce Ellis Herz has been approved for induction into the Memorial Field Trial Hall of Fame as a result of his decades of accomplishments, devotion and dedication to the sport of Pointing Breed field events. The induction ceremony is scheduled for February 2024 (exact date TBD) at the Field Trial Hall of Fame located in Grand Junction, Tennessee. The Herz family will be attending the induction ceremony in person as they are incredibly proud and honored to have Ellis’ contributions recognized and memorialized by the Hall of Fame.
Hall of Fame induction costs are raised through private donations from the inductee’s family, friends, associates and acquaintances. Accordingly, a GoFundMe page has been established for anyone interested in contributing to Ellis’ Hall of Fame induction costs (all funds go directly to the Herz Family on behalf of the Field Trial Hall of Fame). A target goal of $2,500 has been established as follows:
HOF costs (planning, coordination, invitations, announcements, induction ceremony & custom engraved HOF plaque) = $1,200
HOF replica plaques for the Herz Family = $280
HOF donation on behalf of the Ellis Herz Family = remaining balance
Please feel free to pass this information along to others. Also, please let me know if you are interested in attending the induction ceremony in person or would like to order a replica HOF plaque and I will gladly provide additional details.
First and foremost, Ellis was a loving, dedicated family man who doted on his children and grandchildren. He beamed with pride and joy when speaking of his family. He was kind, caring, generous and selfless. He built close bonds and was diligent about maintaining regular communications with his friends. He owned Maxson's Pharmacy in Sherman Oaks, CA until he sold it and retired in 2022.
Ellis got his first Vizsla, DC AFC Russet Leather Pretty Pawnee (Pawnee), from Beverley and Ed Wanjon in 1979. Ellis credited Bev with changing his entire life. Shortly after that he joined the Vizsla Club of Southern California and the Vizsla Club of America where he met Bill Gibbons. His friendship with Bill was the catalyst for his passion and devotion to Pointing breeds. From that point, Ellis became a force, fixture and ambassador in the field. Whether it be competing, judging, bird planting, gunning, chairing events, serving on committees or just helping out, Ellis unselfishly volunteered his time and energies to promote the field sports he adored. He traveled across the country participating and judging field trials as far as Alaska. He judged numerous National Field Trial Championships for many different Pointing breeds. He also Chaired the 2019 AKC Gun Dog Nationals.
He won the Vizsla Club of America National Field Trial Championship in consecutive years (96’ & 97’) with his dog 2xNFC DC AFC Sun Up Magnum Forty Four MH (Pistol). Pistol went on to become the winningest FT Vizsla at the time. Over the years, Ellis owned and/or campaigned Vizslas, German Wirehaired Pointers, Brittanys (and more) including Pawnee, Mohave Sunrise, FC AFC Baker’s Darlin’ Sportin’ Ginny (Ginny), FC AFC Magma’s Mentowin (Gabe), Backwood's Hit The Road Runnin', Backwood's The Buck Stops Here (and many more).
He loved gunning, telling jokes and field trial stories. He could never say “no” and was always willing to help. Ellis was always a helpful, friendly face who treated everyone with dignity and respect.
He served as the President of the Vizsla Club of Southern California and the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of Southern California for many years and served as the event Chairman for their field trails and hunt tests. His contributions and accomplishments would fill an entire book!
Widely respected and admired by all…. he WILL be dearly missed!
