Elli's Gap Year: Tanzania Trips With Duke ICCARE

Hi guys!
Before heading to college, I have decided to take a gap year to explore my passion for working with kids and making a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
In August 2020, I am headed to Tanzania to volunteer with International Cancer Care and Research Excellence Foundation (ICCARE), a non-profit created by Duke Medical Center. Their mission is to give any child diagnosed with cancer the same chance of being cured as anyone else, regardless of their resources, location, or financial status. In just 6 short years, ICCARE has increased the survival rate for children at the Bugando Medical Centre (where I will be working) from 19% to 47%! However, in most developed countries the survival rate is 85%.
As a volunteer Child Life Specialist, I've been asked to create a sustainable program that will increase the number of children finishing their treatments by providing positive and enriching activities while they receive cancer treatment. To do so, I will establish relationships in the community to support ongoing experiences for the children and their families. Additionally, I will create and implement gardening, music, art, games and other fun, therapeutic activities - all of which will require that I learn Swahili!
On August 12 I will leave Raleigh and head to Mwanza, Tanzania for 5 weeks. Originally, I was planning to go from July 1st to October 1st but due to COVID-19 and other conflicting issues my trip will be cut short. With your help, I also plan to return to Mwanza for three months in January.
I am requesting financial assistance to help pay for some of my traveling and logistics (2 round trips to East Africa) and living expenses.
With the leftover funds, I will donate them to ICCARE to further support the program.
