Mental Health Placement Sri Lanka
Donation protected
Our Plan:
We are raising money so we can complete a Mental Health Nursing placement in Kandy, Sri Lanka over the period of a month. We will be departing on September 23rd and returning on October 22nd. To raise money we will be completing a 33.2 mile walk from Linden Unit, Weymouth to St Ann's Hospital, Poole. We have chosen to walk this route as it highlights the distance between mental health beds within the county and the NHS Trust that we both work for.
Our Inspiration:
Ella: As a child I grew up with a step-parent who had a mental health illness, there are over 50,000 children in the UK who care for their parents with mental health illnesses in the UK. In 2013 I unfortunately lost my step-dad through suicide and my life has never been the same since. Losing him was a massive turning point in my life and realized I wanted to help other people through the situation I found myself in. I changed career from electrical engineer to begin studying mental health nursing, in the hope of making a change, and I have never looked back.
I am hoping that travelling to Sri Lanka to volunteer will help boost my confidence and widen my knowledge and skills within mental health nursing. I look forward to working in a challenging situations and understanding how we care for people who are mentally unwell with very little resources available.
Charly: 1 in 3 people will experience mental health problems within their life time and in 2015 there was a staggering total of 1688 suicides in the UK. A year before my training one of my friends who was struggling with Bi-Polar Affective Disorder sadly committed suicide. This was moment that inspired me to do my training and three years later I am hoping to go over to Sri Lanka to learn about the mental health system in a developing country. I think it will be an incredible experience to learn how nurses over there treat and care for people with mental health problems in poorly-resourced areas.
