Elizabeth Street Garden is the last real public green-space in Little Italy and SoHo, NYC. Official Website: elizabethstreetgarden.com
Donate today and help our community protect and preserve the magic of the Garden for generations to enjoy.
AboutThe Garden is on City owned land, privately leased, and made open to the public by Elizabeth Street Garden (Inc) a 501c3 non-profit, 100 % volunteer based organization (ESG, Elizabethstreetgarden.com).
ESG programs free educational, wellness and arts-related events throughout the year for children, seniors and all who live and work in the community.
Our programs include: Live music, movie screenings, yoga, chi gong, meditation, children's watercoloring, and educational workshops with local public school students.
First a public school site (early 1800’s - early 1900’s) which was later torn down for housing in the 1970’s, the lot was left blighted and full of waste through the 1980’s until 1991, when neighborhood resident and gallery owner, Allan Reiver, leased the lot from the City, planting trees, grass and flowers and installing sculptures.
Currently, the local community along with the majority of our elected officials support saving the Garden.
The threat is real, and fast approaching.
The City is seeking to develop the Garden into affordable senior housing with ground-floor retail, despite our community's identification of several alternative locations that can provide 5 - 10x as much housing.
The City continues to ignore:
- 4 Community Board resolutions in favor of saving the Garden
- Majority elected official support
- Over 9,000 letters & signatures in support of the Garden
- Several alternative locations for affordable senior housing that can provide far more housing then the garden site.
