Eleven Years Sober and Learning to Drive
Donation protected
Tammy Shockley is a grandmother in recovery who – at two years sober – took on the responsibility of being the sole caregiver for her 11-month old granddaughter.
Tammy, 53, and Aryian, (now 9), live in a severely underprivileged neighborhood of Kansas City, Mo. Tammy works in retail sales and has to catch two (and sometimes three) bus transfers to get to and from work.
Thanks to the efforts of kind friends who've been helping her out on the weekends, Tammy recently learned to drive. She's ready to take the exam and get her driver’s license … for the first time in her life.
Despite working hard and being a “single caregiver,” Tammy simply cannot afford to save money for a car. (Like 40% of Americans, she would not be able to cover even a $400 emergency.)
Why should you care? Well, first, she is a fellow human who is genuinely trying her best to provide for herself and her granddaughter. Also, Tammy is a goodhearted woman. She simply needs a little assistance to make life just a little less burdensome for herself and Aryan.
I can vouch for Tammy’s goodness and her quality sobriety. And I will personally be the one to help her purchase a decent car so she no longer has to face the problems that accompany not having a vehicle in Kansas City. Among the many challenges she has faced while relying on public transportation in Kansas City, Tammy has suffered from heat stroke and escaped various assaults while walking/riding the bus.
Please help us raise $3,000 to provide Tammy with a reliable vehicle. Even $20 to $100 dollar donations, if we get enough of them, will help us achieve our goal. Over the past year, by being very frugal, Tammy has saved a little over $1500. And I promise to provide updates on our fundraising efforts, as well as photos, when we get her a car!
