Kachikau Primary School sits in a small village near Kasane, in northern Botswana's Chobe District. It is home to a Special Education Unit that provides schooling, accommodation, and daily meals to around 32 learners with disabilities from surrounding villages. For many of these children, it is the only place where they can access education tailored to their needs.
A key part of their curriculum is practical learning: growing vegetables, tending crops, and developing hands-on skills that will serve them long after they leave school. But there's a problem. The school's garden fences have deteriorated, and wildlife regularly breaks through and destroys what the children have planted. In a region known for the world's highest elephant density, this is not a small challenge. Without proper fencing, the practical component of their education simply cannot take place.
At Munga Plains, we operate a yoga and safari retreat just outside Chobe National Park, and Kachikau is our neighboring community. Our staff come from these villages. Our guests visit the school during cultural exchanges. These children are not distant beneficiaries. They are our neighbors.
We are raising funds to cover the full cost of installing an electric fence around the school garden, so that Kachikau's learners with special needs can finally cultivate their crops without losing them to roaming animals. This will allow them to learn agriculture, gain independence, and contribute to their own meals.
