Work student. Recently I did my first work placement for my degree in a community centre in my local regional town. I was privileged enough to meet a 68yr old local homeless woman whose story touched me. This lovely lady who helps out each day at the centre had a failed knee replacement 3 years ago which resulted in her losing her job in a local dairy. She quickly became unable to afford her rent and with the extreme housing crisis in our area and no family to fall back on she found herself sleeping in her car. Fast forward to today and she is still sleeping in her car. She owns 2 cars in which she keeps all her earthly belongings. One car is mainly for sleeping and one for getting around. Both need work. The car she sleeps in needs a timing belt and water pump. The other car needs a new head or head gasket. She has to constantly fill her car with water in order to drive it. Being in constant pain with her knee as well as numerous other health conditions makes the situation almost unbearable. Women over the age of 55 are the fastest growing demographic becoming homeless in Australia, while lists for housing can see you waiting years. Please donate if you can, even small amounts add up!
