Hi and thanks for taking the time to read this post, my name is Walt. I’ve never done this before and I’m not sure if this is an emergency or a charity or the right place for this issue but I hope some of you can help me with a friend of mine name George Woods. George is an 81-year-old man who served about eight years in the United States Air Force in the late 1950’s to mid 1960s as a load master for military cargo planes. Since the early 1970s he has worked as a handyman for who ever would hirer him. Sometimes George works with my friends and me remodeling homes and offices and any home repair jobs we can get here in central Florida, that is how I met and got to know George over thirty years ago. About eight years ago George had a heart bypass surgery which he recovered from fairly well and about two years ago he fell and fractured his hip, since then as an 81-year-old man he’s had a hard time getting around and taking care of his home.
During this Easter weekend, I did a surprise visit to George’s house for the first time in over year and notice his house was falling down on him. Now I understood why he hasn’t invited any of us to his house over the last year or so. George told me that Hurricane Irma back in September of 2017 had beaten it up pretty good and he didn’t have the money to keep up the insurance. The roof is leaking in most of the rooms and the ceilings are falling down. The kitchen stove only has one burner working, the oven doesn’t work at all and the refrigerator doesn’t get very cold. He’s cooking on a charcoal grill outside on the back porch when the weather permits and the City code enforcement are threatening to put liens on his home if he doesn’t fix it.
A few of my friends and me which consist of roofers, carpenters and other interior and exterior skilled people will volunteer the labor if we can get the materials to do the job right! So we are hoping to raise some money to buy the materials to fix up George’s house before the heat and rainy season starts up here in Florida and keep the city code enforcement away from his house. We figure the roofing shingles (24 sq), felt paper, valley metal, drip edge metal, pipe boots, nails, caulking and replacing all of the bad wood decking, new sheet rock to do the ceilings, interior painting, kitchen counters, stove and oven, refrigerator, carpet and other small things would cost around $9000.00 to $10,000.00 dollars. I know that money can be tight these days but if you can help the guys here in Orlando fix up a nice old mans home by making a donation and then sharing it with your network so George can live out the rest of his life in his home, in peace, we would greatly appreciate it.
