EJ Honor and Service Project

Who We Are:

The Shoe Club is a leadership club made up of a group of middle school students and high school mentors from East Jordan Middle High School. The club is partnering with the American Legion to raise funds to enhance GAR Park in downtown East Jordan.

We are passionate about honoring our local veterans. We know this project is going to have a lasting impact and we are excited to take steps to honor heroes in our community.

Our Project:

The East Jordan Shoe Club embarked upon a yearlong project to honor our local heroes - past, present and future. Members helped to create a lasting and living memorial for the veterans by raising funds to build Grand Army of the Republic Veterans Park, planned and organized a Veterans Day assembly, had monthly leadership lessons built around the Veterans Star and will be experiencing first hand what it means to be a veteran by visiting Gettysburg Military Park.

The East Jordan Shoe Club is close to completing the goals of their Honor & Service Project to recognize area veterans. Funds for GAR Park include a pavilion, landscaping, fencing, military relic, signage and sidewalks. Private and corporate donations, as well as municipal grants have contributed to raising funds for GAR park. Now they need your help to get to the finish line in time for a dedication on Memorial Day 2024.

Community Impact:

The Shoe Club is privileged to partner with the American Legion to create a beautiful outdoor space that will be around for many years to come. GAR Park will provide a space for reflection and honor in our community. This park has a fascinating history dating back to the early 1900's. A beautiful opera house once stood on this lot, however after burning down the land was donated to the city as a park to remember and honor the veterans of the Civil War. A stainless steel veterans star was constructed by the high school welding class last year. Seeing this star installed in GAR Park has inspired the community. The Shoe Club and American Legion are hopeful in completing the enhancements to this park.
