Ein sicheres Zuhause für eine Familie in Uganda

Über uns: Wir, das sind Rose (aus Uganda) und Kathi (aus Deutschland). Uns verbindet mittlerweile nicht nur eine langjährige und gute Freundschaft, sondern auch verschiedene Projekte, die wir gemeinsam gestartet und umgesetzt haben, um Menschen in der ländlichen Region um Hoima (Uganda) zu unterstützen. Unser aktuelles Projekt zielt auf die Unterstützung von Witwen und Waisen ab, das Budget sprengt jedoch unseren normalen Finanzierungsrahmen, weshalb wir euch gerne um eure Unterstützung bitten möchten:

Zur Situation: Frau Kiiza lebt seit dem Tod ihres Mannes mit den vier Kindern in einem Unterschlupf (siehe Foto), der nur notdürftig zusammen gehalten wird. Die Wände bestehen aus Gras, nachts dienen Bananenblätter als Tür. Das Haus, das ihr Mann noch begonnen hatte, ist zerfallen. Nun kocht, schläft und lebt die Familie gemeinsam mit den Tieren (Ziegen und Hühnern) seit zwei Jahren in dem Unterstand. Die hygienischen Bedingungen sind dadurch sehr schlecht, die Familie ist kaum vor Regen und Hitze geschützt und der Rauch des täglichen Feuers belastet die Atemwege. Weitere Gesundheitsrisiken bestehen durch das direkte Zusammenleben mit den Tieren, welche Krankheiten übertragen können und es besteht eine hohe Brandgefahr, falls das Feuer abends nicht vollständig gelöscht wird. Zudem gibt es keine Möglichkeit in geschütztem, hygienischen Rahmen die eigene Notdurft zu verrichten.

Die Familie hat eigenes Land auf dem sie zur Selbstversorgung und zum Tausch einige Nahrungsmittel anbauen können. Die Familie lebt davon direkt von der Hand in den Mund. Die Chance, dass sich die Familie genug erwirtschaften könnte, um selbst einen soliden Unterstand zu finanzieren besteht praktisch nicht. Zumal Kosten für Bau und Materialien in den vergangenen Jahren u.a. aufgrund der Folgen der Corona-Pandemie enorm gestiegen sind.

Das Ziel: Bau eines einfachen aber stabilen und sicheren Zuhauses für die Familie. Der in Uganda typische Aufbau des Hauses umfasst mehrere Schlafbereiche, eine kleine Kochnische außerhalb des Hauses und eine Latrine ebenfalls außerhalb des Hauses. Uns liegt ein Kostenvoranschlag für eine solche Konstruktion vor, die umgerechnet ca. 23.700 Euro umfasst. Die Umsetzung erfolgt mit möglichst lokalen Baumaterialien und Bauarbeitern aus der Region.

Sollte nicht genug Geld für eine komplette Konstruktion zusammen kommen, so werden wir versuchen mit dem erhaltenen Geld zumindest in sich abgeschlossene Teile des Hauses (Latrine oder Küche) umzusetzen. Sofern auch das nicht gelingt, wird die Familie z.B. durch den Kauf von Schulmaterialien oder Nutztieren (je nach Bedarf) unterstützt.

Rose kennt mehrere Familien persönlich, die unter sehr ähnlichen Bedingungen leben. Unser Wunsch wäre es, so vielen wie möglich zu helfen. Beginnen möchten wir mit dieser einen Familie, die uns ausdrücklich die Erlaubnis erteilt hat ihre Geschichte hier zu erzählen und Fotos einzustellen. Wenn wir erfolgreich sind werden wir einfach weiter machen und nach Rücksprache weitere Familien vorstellen.

A safe home for a family in Uganda

About us: We are Rose (from Uganda) and Kathi (from Germany). We are connected not only by a long-standing and good friendship, but also by various projects that we have started and implemented together to support people in the rural region around Hoima (Uganda). Our current project aims to support widows and orphans, but the budget is beyond our normal financial framework. This is why we would like to ask for your support:

About the situation: Mrs. Kiiza [a widow] has been living with the four children in a shelter that you see in the photo, provisionally held together with grass as walls and dry banana leaves which work as a door at night. The house that her husband left behind has fallen into disrepair. Now for 2 years, the family cooks, sleeps and lives together with the animals (that is goats and chicken) in the same shelter. The hygienic conditions are very bad, the family is hardly protected from rain and heat (when it rains they fear as wind can easily take away that shelter, and during the hot season the heat is too much as the shelter has no ventilation)

The smoke of the daily fire pollutes their respiratory tract which puts them at risk of suffering from diseases of the respiratory system. Also diseases can be transmitted to them through direct coexistence with the animals. There is a high risk of fire and associated danger in case they forget to put off the fire as they go to bed. As they have no permanent structure of a latrine, they risk getting diseases related to personal hygiene.

The family has their own land where they can grow some food crops for self-sufficiency and exchange. The family lives from hand to mouth. The chance that the family would be able to earn enough to finance a solid shelter itself is practically non-existent. Especially since costs for construction and materials have risen enormously in recent years due to the consequences of the Corona pandemic, among other things.

The goal: To build a simple but stable and safe home for the family. The typical Ugandan structure of the house includes some sleeping areas, a small kitchen outside the house and a latrine also outside the house. We have a cost estimate for such a construction, which amounts to the equivalent of approx. 23.700 euros. The implementation is carried out with local building materials and construction workers from the region. If there is not enough money for a complete construction, we will try to use the money received to at least construct parts of the house (that is either a latrine or kitchen). If this is not possible either, the family is supported, for example, by buying school materials or farm animals (as needed).

Rose personally knows several families who live in very similar conditions. Our wish would be to help as many as possible. We would like to start with this one family that has given us explicit permission to tell their story here and to post photos. If we are successful, we will just go ahead and introduce more families after consultation.
