Efe’s Widows’ Foundation is a new and young charity, supporting widows with small businesses.
Widows in Nigeria often face a harrowing ordeal, marked by cultural practices that can be both discriminatory and tragic. Many while trying to deal with the loss of their loved one who might have been the sole income earner in the household, are then subjected to harmful rituals, which can involve physical and emotional abuse. Additionally, they may be denied access to their husband's property or inheritances, leaving them financially vulnerable. The stigma associated with widowhood can lead to social ostracism and isolation, further compounding their suffering. These practices, rooted in deeply ingrained cultural beliefs, contribute to a culture of discrimination against widows. Tragically, without adequate legal protection or social support, many widows struggle to care for their children, perpetuating cycles of poverty and suffering.
Many widows, to make ends meet, turn to trade and set up small businesses buying and selling to the public.
The Foundation provides small loans for business expansion. This project started in 2018 with one widow. The foundation now supports 20 widows with each widow being adopted by a financial donor.
We have had great testimonials from widows who have expanded their businesses. They have been able to live healthier lives and manage the education of their children better.
AWOS is fundraising to generate funds to expand on the widows loan scheme to help the foundation help more widows and achieve its long term goals.
