Estonian Festival Eesti Päevad 2018

What is it?

Estonians have been holding ‘Eesti Päevad’ – the Australian Estonian Festival – in Australia since 1954. The first was in Sydney and since then the festivals have been held every 2-3 years, in turn, in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

The XXVII Eesti Päevad Estonian Festival will take place in Sydney at the end of 2018. The program consists of a wide range of events including choral music, theatre, folk dancing, arts & crafts exhibition, activities for kids and popular musicians from Estonia.

The festival is non-profit and all people and groups involved in organising it are volunteers, who generously give their time and expertise without getting paid.

Organising Sydney Eesti Päevad is very costly, especially considering that Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world and, unlike Melbourne and Adelaide, the Sydney Estonian House is unfortunately not big enough to hold the Opening Gala, Rahvapidu or NYE events.

The festival’s organising committee is traditionally given a loan from AESL (Council of Estonian Societies in Australia) to get the festival preparations underway and the necessary deposits for venue and equipment hire paid to be able to put together a programme. However, this amount is not enough to cover the costs of the festival. Also ticket sales alone only cover 50% of the festival.

We rely on patrons, sponsors, supporters and private donations from passionate members of the Estonian community, to sustain the festival.
