It started with one sentence:
"If you really want to help us, we’d love for our kids to go to school."
That simple sentence by a parent in Fort Dauphin, Madagascar, changed everything. It sparked what is now the second edition of the Education For All fundraiser—a grassroots initiative led by Project Mitahy, in partnership with MadaLiving, to remove barriers to education for children from an underserved community.
How It All Began
In 2023, during a personal trip to Fort Dauphin, I met a group of women from the Antandroy community, displaced from southern Madagascar due to drought and famine (locally known as the kere). Their resilience and joy left a mark on me. I felt so moved, so grateful, that I wanted to give something back—something that would last.
On my next visit, thanks to many generous donors, I was able to distribute clothes, books, and supplies to the community. But when a parent shared that what they truly needed was help sending their children to school—I knew this had to become something bigger.
And that’s how Project Mitahy’s “Education For All” initiative was born.
What We Achieved in 2024 (1st edition)
With your support, our first fundraiser raised $2,600 CAD, which allowed 117 children to attend school for an entire year. We covered:
- School supplies
- Registration fees
- Basic classroom materials
It was a strong beginning—but just the beginning.
This Year’s Goal: $8,000 CAD for 140 Children
This year, we want to do more. Not just get them in the classroom—but help them thrive.
Your donations will cover:
- School supplies & fees
- Daily lunch at the school canteen
- Uniforms
- Administrative prep for the CEPE exam
- A small emergency medical fund
- A part-time community coordinator to track school progress
Every $60 = one child fully supported for the year.
❤️ Why It Matters
During a short two-week visit this year, three children contracted malaria with fevers reaching 39°C, two others had skin problems that weren’t chickenpox, and three more had prolonged cases of chickenpox. One 2-year-old girl had been sick and malnourished for several months. A visit to the doctor and prescriptions costing 80,000 Ar (around $24.70 CAD) revealed severe malnutrition in several children, as well as how inaccessible healthcare is.
All of them recovered within the week — except for the little girl, who sadly passed away two months later when her illness returned, and her mother couldn’t afford to take her to the doctor again.
It is therefore with a heavy heart, but still filled with hope, that this year, we want to do more.
By contributing, you're not just sending a child to school—you’re investing in their future, their health, and restoring their right to dream. You’re reminding them that they matter.
