Hello! This May 2020, 20 Purdue students including myself will be traveling to Tanzania, Africa. We will be there for 28 days! This spring semester we spend time each week together learning about the country and communities. We will spend the majority of our time in local village schools helping students learn. We also visit local orphanages and share time getting to know the children. Along with developing relationships with the people living in the village, we are also striving to provide several groups of individuals there with some things that will bring joy into their lives and help make it a little easier. We have several teams of service projects that include: Fish Eagle Point, Boma Village, Samaritan Village and Pamoja Leo Orphanages, Amara Conservation Project, and 7 local schools. Fish Eagle Point is where we spend most of our trip. Our goal is to buy the staff rain ponchos that will allow the walk to work and the duration of their day spent outside working easier. Boma Village needs water tanks to provide the residents with clean, fresh water. We will also purchase solar equipment, athletic equipment, cooking equipment, and medical supplies. Samaritan Village Orphanage is consistently in need of supplies, such as clothes, books, school supplies, toys, medicine, vitamins, and kitchen supplies to serve the 50 children in their care. Some Purdue students will also travel to Amara Conservation Project to take students on safari where they teach them about wildlife and habitat conservation efforts and organizing a tree nursery. A school in Tanga needs materials like steel, concrete, sand and stones to repair and reinforce a road that is the only access to the school. Our plan for some of the schools is to fund new cement in one of the secondary schools, chalkboard paint for as many of the schools as possible, at least one notebook and pen for 2500 students and teacher supplies. We will also provide athletic equipment like soccer balls, jump ropes, and volleyballs.
Any help you can provide with these efforts will be greatly appreciated…maybe you have some clothes you’d like to give, maybe you’d like to buy some children’s books, maybe you’d like to donate a bit of money to help purchase something for the schools…however you give, the result will be the same – someone’s life in East Africa will be a little bit better because of your generosity. We would like to collect donations by April 1 if possible. Thank you very much for your help!
