A new community wood workshop space at The Forge

Donation protected
We are a community workshop seeking funding to help us expand our workshop space. This funding will allow us to accommodate our growing membership and carry out much needed upgrades to help us provide safer access to maker tools and facilities for the wider Edinburgh community.

About The Forge:
The Forge is an organic community interest company created to address a much overlooked aspect of our city's tenement-based housing - the lack of space to repair, to maintain, to build and create.

What defines the Forge today is its all-inclusive, welcoming environment where a culture of skill-sharing enables those with no previous knowledge to dive into our workshop and learn the satisfaction of making something with their own two hands.

Our dedicated volunteers are our beating heart, giving life to the shipping containers which house our donated tools and accommodate our active membership, creating the venue as it stands now. Any money we make is reinvested to  improve facilities and tools, to fund workshops and cultivate our community's skills and capabilities.

What is this funding for?

In the last year the Forge has grown in membership. A donation of food stall sheds from the Fringe Festival has enabled us to build a new indoor space, which we’d like to convert into a fully functioning wood workshop. We plan to move all the noisy and dust-producing machinery into this space, and install dust extraction, making a safer environment for our members. Our current wood workshop, housed in a converted shipping container, will become a dedicated space for hand tool and assembly work – accommodating a broader range of users.

We've built the shed...now we need electrics, lighting and extraction! Please help us, any donation will be very gratefully received by our community.

Below is a breakdown of how we intend to spend your donations:

- Trunking for power cables    £120
- LED strip lights    £150
- Wood for bench surfaces    £72
- Power sockets    £18
- Light switches    £15
- Power cables    £70
- Power distribution board    £80
- Dust extraction piping    £380
- Electric installation sign off by qualified electrician    £85

We are not limited to our target, if over the next 3 months we raise more funds than our target we will use this to fund further improvements to our facilities and spaces.
