“Pay up $218,000 now or get out,” a predatory reverse mortgage company told my grandma, just a week after her husband, my grandpa, died from COVID 19 complications. Our family is grieving his loss and scrambling to save the home my grandparents built and have shared for 36 years.
My grandpa, Arthur Mitchell, passed away May 6th of this year leaving behind many friends and family that loved him, and the one who loved him most of all, my grandma, Donna Mitchell, his wife of 57 years.
My grandpa was born and raised in a tiny town out in the Maine wilderness where he built his legacy in the woodworking community. First as a teacher, and then as a small business owner, he and his wife started W.A. Mitchell Furniture Makers from a shed just outside their front door.
At some point, my grandparents took out a reverse mortgage on their property. After my grandpa’s passing, my grandma was given two options by the loan company - pay off the loan in full or sell.
I started this fundraiser to help my grandma save her home. I don't want to see her separated from the home she loves and has lived in for most of her life, especially with my grandpa now buried at the tiny family cemetery just yards away.
My grandparents never really lived a financially comfortable life, but they were happy. I don't want my grandma to be burdened with any more grief and pain. More than anything, I want to fix this for her.
All funding will go toward paying off the loan, so my grandmother can continue living in her home. Any additional funding will go toward paying off any leftover funeral costs and future payments to my grandmother's monthly bills.
