ECOCIDE - HANGING GARDENS RESTORATION - UMBRIA

My name is Betony Vernon and I have created this fundraiser to help restore a precious piece of land in Umbria to its original state as a community hanging winter garden.

The land, comprised of 4000 square metres, once provided olive oil and food for the village. Unfortunately, it is now in a state of abandon and victim of Ecocide (the destruction of the natural environment by deliberate or negligent human action. Ecocide is a crime against the earth.) Our aim is to clean out the trash embedded in the soil, restore biodiversity, save the secular olive tree grove and re-green the entire territory. Starting from uprooting infesting canes (which will prompt indigenous flora to return) and the planting of fruit trees.

Il terreno, composto da circa 4000 metri quadrati, forniva un tempo olio d'oliva e cibo per il villaggio. Purtroppo, è ora in uno stato di abbandono e vittima di Ecocidio: la distruzione dell'ambiente naturale per azione deliberata o negligente dell'uomo. L'Ecocidio è un crimine contro la terra. Il nostro obiettivo è liberare il terreno dai rifiuti intrappolati nel suolo, ripristinare la biodiversità, salvare gli olivi secolari e risanare la vegetazione dell'intero territorio. Inizieremo con l'estirpazione delle canne infestanti, che favorirà il ritorno della flora autoctona, e la piantagione di alberi da frutto.

The soil is deeply embedded with trash – barbed wire, asbestos, shards of glass, syringes, razors, broken toys, ceramic fragments, wine bottles, nylon stockings, rotten clothing, plastic containers, and the list could go on and on. It is the dramatic result of people throwing trash out of the windows of the apartments situated over four Roman cisterns that once collected rain water for the entire village's use.

Il suolo è profondamente impregnato di rifiuti: filo spinato, amianto, frammenti di vetro, siringhe, rasoi, giocattoli rotti, frammenti di ceramica, bottiglie di vino, calze di nylon, vestiti deteriorati, contenitori di plastica, e molto altro. È l’esito drammatico causato da persone che gettano i propri scarti dalle finestre degli appartamenti situati sopra quattro cisterne romane, che un tempo raccoglievano l'acqua piovana per l'uso dell'intero villaggio.

The land is extremely steep and the stone walls that once held the cultivated terraces in place have crumbled in abandon, making the danger of landslides imminent. In the case such a catastrophe should happen, not only human lives could be put at risk, but a main thoroughfare that leads to Rome would be blocked. There are approximately eighty secular olive trees on the land that are currently preventing landslide, but they require urgent care and attention.

Il terreno è estremamente ripido e i muri di pietra che un tempo sostenevano le terrazze coltivate sono crollati nell'abbandono, rendendo imminente il pericolo di frane. Nell’eventualità di una catastrofe del genere, non solo potrebbero essere messe a rischio vite umane, ma verrebbe bloccata una strada principale che conduce a Roma. Attualmente, ci sono circa ottanta olivi secolari sul terreno che impediscono frane, ma necessitano di urgenti cure e attenzione.

Acting promptly to restore the soil, the stone wall terracing and the precious Roman cistern is an obligation to future generations, to the land and to the entire community. This restoration will require a strong team in every way. Some members of the community are already involved in the clean-up, but reversing the dramatic effects of this ecocide urgently requires costly skilled help and expertise, starting with toxic waste disposal, landscaping to secure the territory, the building of stone containment walls, installation of land irrigation systems etc.

Agire prontamente per risanare il suolo, i terrazzamenti con muri di contenimento in pietra e la preziosa cisterna romana è un obbligo per le generazioni future, per la terra e per l'intera comunità. Questo risanamento richiede una squadra forte. Alcuni membri della comunità sono già coinvolti nella pulizia, ma contrastare gli effetti drammatici di questo ecocidio richiede urgentemente un aiuto costoso e competenze specifiche, a partire dallo smaltimento di rifiuti tossici, la progettazione del paesaggio per mettere in sicurezza il territorio, la costruzione di muri di contenimento in pietra, l'installazione di sistemi di irrigazione, e molto altro.

It is no longer an option - we must take responsibility to contribute to the betterment of the quality of life, our future and the climate in general. I hope to inspire you to take bottom-up action with me, knowing that it will not happen from the top down. This micro project is the first of many that we aim to take on in the area; we aim to make it an example of what can and must happen on a global scale if we are to change the world together for the better.

To restore the soil is to restore the soul.

Non è più un'opzione: dobbiamo assumerci la responsabilità di contribuire al miglioramento della qualità della vita, del nostro futuro e della situazione climatica in generale. Spero di ispirarvi ad agire con me, sapendo che non avverrà dall'alto verso il basso. Questo micro-progetto è il primo di molti che intendiamo affrontare nella zona; vogliamo renderlo un esempio di ciò che può e deve accadere su scala globale, se vogliamo cambiare insieme il mondo in meglio.

Risanare il suolo significa risanare l'anima.

Thanks to your donations and the efforts of the villagers that have agreed to support this ambitious project, we will restore this land to its original state as a community garden. Everyone will collect the fruits along the way as they did for over 2000 years before the land was abandoned in the 1950s. In order to honour our donors and everyone who is actively involved, whether they come to work the earth with us or support our efforts from afar, we have come up with some special rewards. Our intention is to activate your re-greening genes and join us in the land restoration movement that is happening right now. We will keep you updated with our progress here.
