Help Two Ex-NFL Linemen Support Their Friend Nate!

Story

Nate is a young man with a great heart and a sharp mind who is working to overcome the aftershocks of an extremely challenging childhood. Two of his friends/mentors, longtime NFL players Ed White and Jerry Sherk, want to help Nate raise funds to acquire an electric bicycle, transportation that will help secure employment and give him a better chance at a successful future.Nate’s friends Ed and Jerry have a history of helping to raise up mentees, as well as working with non-profit organizations around the country. Ed White (Minnesota Vikings, San Diego Chargers) is the executive director at the Oak Lake Art Center nonprofit, and Jerry Sherk (Cleveland Browns) has worked as a national youth mentoring consultant for over 25 years. They now want to use their social networks for the benefit of their young friend Nate.In order to maintain Nate's personal privacy, Jerry and Ed have chosen to conceal some details about his life. Nate has experienced a number of tragedies throughout his young life--more in his first 18 years than many of us will experience in our entire lives. He and his mother escaped an extremely abusive household, and were forced into hiding for prolonged periods of time. As a result, Nate experienced repeated stretches of homelessness starting at age 12, and had to drop out of school after the sixth grade. After fighting a prolonged illness for many years, Nate's mother passed away in early 2020. He is now left with no other family to rely upon, and has been living with a generous Christian couple for the last several months. The effects of his challenging childhood, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress and intense social anxiety, have made finishing his education and finding work extremely difficult. Nate has done a great job doing tasks such as yard work for Jerry and Ed, but he lives in an isolated part of San Diego County--an area that’s notoriously difficult to navigate without reliable transportation. He needs a way to commute in order to find steady employment, as well as to begin growing personal and professional connections. Nate doesn’t have a license and is unable to drive, so at this point, obtaining a car isn't feasible. However, he believes that securing an electric bike will be a life-changer for him. For those unfamiliar with e-bikes, they are an increasingly popular form of pedal-supported transport. An economic and eco-friendly form of commuting, these rechargeable bicycles allow the rider to travel faster (up to around 25 mph) and further than they would be able to on a manual bike.Though Jerry and Ed continue to provide Nate with support, they’re now asking their friends, family, fans, and others to help this young man on his path to success. The $2,500 we aim to raise would cover:A reliable electric bicycle ($2,000)Heavy-duty bike lock ($75) Helmet ($50)Rain gear for winter commuting ($50)Bike pump and tools ($50)Tune-ups ($150)Spare tubes ($20)Rechargeable bike lights ($50) Theft insurance ($100/year)Other safety gear and necessary accessories for commuting via bike Anything beyond the initial donation goal will go towards helping Nate find food, work clothes, and other necessities. Ed, Jerry, and Nate all thank you for your consideration!
