Easing Rick's Burden After Tragedy

Last month, my brother Rick experienced an unimaginable tragedy—he lost his only son, John Bender, to suicide. Our entire family is devastated by this heartbreaking loss.

In the wake of this tragedy, Rick took time off from his job with the school district to grieve and begin the healing process. He had hoped to receive support through the district’s catastrophic leave policy. Unfortunately, he later found out that this leave only applies to situations involving a child’s illness—not the death of a child. As a result, he was left without the financial assistance he had counted on during this incredibly difficult time.

I’m creating this fundraiser on Rick’s behalf to help ease the unexpected financial burden he now faces. The costs associated with losing a child—combined with the loss of income—have added stress to an already overwhelming period of grief.
