This is the Official Go Fund Me Page supporting Jack Markey’s Eagle Project - Wilton Playshop Patio Renovation
My name is Jack Markey and I am a Life Scout with BSA Troop 125 in Wilton, Connecticut. I joined BSA at the end of 5th grade (after having been a Cub Scout prior). I have two passions in my life (well besides the New York Islanders) and they are scouting and theater. I have been involved with theater in Wilton since third grade. I have been in each of Wilton Children’s Theater summer shows (and will be again this summer), as well as all of WCT’s fall school year productions. In addition, I have performed in numerous of Wiremill Academy’s performances during the same timeframe. I have performed numerous of these shows on the stage at the Wilton Playshop and last winter I actually got to perform in Wilton Playshop’s own production of Frosty The Snowman (which was my first performance combining adults and children on stage).
When it became time to think about an Eagle project to do, I knew that I needed to approach one of Wilton’s non-profit theater programs to combine my two passions. Wilton Playshop was established back in 1937, holding its first show at the Lovers Lane location (current location) in 1954. There is so much history of our town within the Wilton Playshop. After speaking with Mrs. Laura Ploss, President of the Wilton Playshop, together we decided that a great way to help make a difference at the Playshop would be renovating their patio. Their current patio is in disrepair. The edges of the patio which are currently railroad ties, along with the step, have all rotted out making it unsafe and unusable. Given the intimate size of the Playshop, along with the current status of no air conditioning within the building, the use of the outdoor space during intermissions and for waiting room space before and after the show, the patio is of utmost importance.
For my project, I have three goals. First to make the space safe and usable, second to make it more sustainable by using stone instead of wood, and lastly to make the space more useful by adding seating as a bench along the small retaining wall.
In order to complete this project, I will need to raise approximately $5,500 in order to secure all the materials needed (the cinderblocks, belgium blocks, slate for step and seating, cement, etc). In addition, I will be seeking the volunteer assistance of my friends and fellow scouts to help with the demolition and reconstruction of this project this spring.
I am seeking assistance from the community, my friends and my family to raise these funds in order to make this project happen. I am hoping those in the community who have a love of theater/ to attend theater performances, those who know what a gem the Wilton Playshop is within our town of Wilton and its history, and those who support scouting and the community service that comes with it, will help me reach this goal. I am also grateful for any donations of materials if someone would like to assist that way.
We will look to start the removal of all the old materials in late April (depending on the weather). The project will take a few weekends to accomplish the various stages. I will share my progress (and final pictures) of my project when completed.
If you have any questions about my project, please let me know and I would be happy to answer them.
