Barbara Hurley was truly unique and there really are no words to embody the spark and light that she brought to this world. She was the life of the party and would give someone the shirt off her back. She cared for others and loved to make care packages to send to her own kids and her “adopted kids” full of useful things and surprises to bring a smile to their face.
Our mom was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2018 due to complications from a blood transfusion. Through the help of Dr. Abrams at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, she was able to have surgery done to remove her tumor. She miraculously fought it off for the next 5 years, never letting on to her loved ones the struggle she was truly powering through.
During the last month, our mom was placed on hospice care so that she could come home and spend her time as comfortably as possible. We came home from the hospital with her with zero knowledge of how hospice worked or how the next few weeks would play out. We gave our all in being caregivers and advocates for our mom these past few weeks and we don’t want another family to feel alone or to struggle the same struggles we faced.
We are raising money to make care packages for families who are going through hospice. The care package includes items that we found really helped us to care for our mom and were not provided by hospice, but purchased separately.
Each package values around $125.00 and includes:
$25 Dunkin gift card
$25 UberEats gift card
$37 Lift/transfer pad
$15 Travel pillow
$10 Heat/cold pack
$13 Two underpads (Chuck pads)
$1.50 Water cup
Our goal is to raise $1,250.00 to make 10 of these care packages.
Most of these items are to help the family, but some like the travel pillow, water cup, and heat/cold pack have been staples in our mom’s comfort and remind us of her specifically.
We would like to donate these items to families in our mom’s name in hopes they help lessen any struggle they face and remind them they aren’t alone. Being a care taker in this position while also being a family member is the most difficult situation we have been in, and we are comforted in knowing we made our mom happy.
Thank you for reading our story and we hope that you are loved by someone the way our mom loved us.
