A Voice for Juvenile Justice

Hi
My name is Najette, I am 26 and I am a passionate children's rights advocate. I have spent the last three years conducting extensive research into the high incarceration rate of children in WA.  Children are sent to juvenile detention too frequently, a blatant disregard of the most fundamental human rights a child should be offered.

My research has been praised by academics at a national level and I have now been asked to present my research at conference titled "Young People and the Law". The conference is to be held in Prato, Tuscany which is where I hope you can help. I volunteer at various organisations over 25 hours a week and as a result it will be challenging for me to have raised enough money in time to attend and present at the conference. It is important that my research is shared on this international platform so that I can raise awareness about the issues facing West Australian youth and discover strategies to assist in dealing with such issues. I  see this as a great opportunity for me to help this vulnerable group.

The Conference is from 21 - 23 September 2015 and will provide some information on international approaches to care, corrections and intervention. Here is some information on the conference:

"While the material well-being and physical health of young people have never been better, the ‘human capital’ of this population has been steadily declining. Young people now face enormous socio-economic challenges, which are in turn affecting rates of mental ill-health, offending behaviours and social disadvantage.
The interaction between young people and various legal, mental health and social welfare systems can often be fraught. Decisions made early in life can have serious repercussions into adulthood. This international conference brings together practitioners, policy contributors, advocates and researchers. We will examine the vulnerabilities of young people and how the systems responding to them must be reshaped around prevention and early intervention to improve outcomes both for the young person and the community.

The conference will give particular attention to the following themes:
youth justice, including early intervention for young offenders
the protection of young people under the law
mental health offending
disadvantaged groups, including indigenous young people, young people with disabilities
diversionary schemes for young people
young people and family violence."

I am fundraising at any opportunity so every little bit counts! I need to raise at least $2500 to be able to go. I hope you will be able to assist in allowing the young people of WA to have a voice on this platform.

If you would like to know more please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you so much for your support, and here is hoping that I can ignite a discussion to break this damaging cycle.
