These are the children of Adventure Village in 2007 as many of them first arrived at an orphanage located in Seeta, Uganda. Many of the children lost their families due to illness, poverty, and abandonment. Christian Life Ministries (CLM) operates one orphanage in Seeta and a second orphanage in Lira, Uganda. The children in Lira are refugees and orphans of a civil war led by the Lord's Resistance Army which destroyed their homes and families. Here is a picture of a number of the children both Lira and Seeta who have grown through this ministry into ambitious adults as they prepare to go to vocational and secondary schools.
Over the last seven years, Ukids has worked closely with CLM to support these children to become future transformers of Uganda. We have recently seen the success of graduating students. Lillian, pictured in the profile picture on the right, has returned to the Seeta orphanage to work as a teacher at the onsite primary school. Paddy, one of our older boys, has been working as an auto mechanic and is working to open up his very own shop where he can host our soon to be graduates for apprenticeships.
Many of our students have scored high enough on national exams to attend some of the best high schools in the country. As more of our students graduate, the standard sponsorship fees are not enough to support the children. To send a student to these secondary schools can cost up to 800,000 Ugandan Shillings which equates to approximately $350.00 US Dollars per term. This cost includes scholastic tuition, national exam fees, transportation to and from school at term end, and school supplies. The students attend three terms per academic year. Currently there are about 380 students in secondary and vocational schools of the 1200 supported by Christian Life Ministries from two different orphanages. Only half of the secondary students have even partial sponsorship. The total funds per term are roughly $133,000.00 USD with less than $50,000 USD coming in from regular sponsorship.
Today, we are hoping to raise just $5,000.00 USD to start with a reach of $15,000.00 USD. Each term we will be working to find unique ways to offset the cost of educating these kids with such high potential to influence the future. It's not every day that the opportunity comes up to make a significant impact on the life of another human being, but today it is.
