Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read this!
I am creating this GoFundMe on behalf of my dad and family during one of the most difficult years of our lives.
On January 3rd, 2025, my father, Bob Rivet, suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke at his home in Detroit.
As a result of the stroke, my dad lost mobility on the right side of his body, developed severe expressive aphasia, and now requires full-time care. Simple things most of us take for granted such as walking, speaking clearly, and getting out of bed has become immense challenges.
After emergency hospitalization, my dad was transferred to a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. While he has worked incredibly hard (with unwavering motivation) in therapy and made very meaningful progress, insurance has ceased the therapy that has made residing there worthwhile.
Living in an institutional setting long-term has now transitioned from therapeutic to taking a heavy toll on his mental health, emotional well-being, and recovery. It has become clear that for his healing and quality of life, he needs to be back in a home environment surrounded by family.
Our family is now working toward bringing my dad home permanently. This includes securing a single-level, wheelchair-accessible home, modifying it to meet ADA accessibility needs, and furnishing it so he can live safely and with dignity. While insurance and Medicaid help cover some medical costs and home equipment, they do not cover many of the expenses required to make a home livable for someone with significant physical disabilities. We are asking graciously for assistance as moving him and my family closer to Brighton would greatly improve our access to him and his resources.
Funds raised will go toward:
• Moving expenses (first and last month’s rent, security deposit)
• Wheelchair-accessible modifications not covered by insurance (ramps, railings, bathroom transfer equipment)
• Basic furniture suited for accessibility and safety
• Other essential costs related to transitioning my dad out of the facility and into a home with family
We are so grateful for everyone who has supported us during this time. It has been so heartwarming to have so many people that have given gifts, come to work with dad throughout his therapy, and visit/help keep his spirits up. My dad has such determination and strength, and pushes himself beyond what doctors thought was possible to be able to walk, talk, and live normally again. He looks forward to getting home so he can continue his therapy in a positive setting, as well as create art and wood carve again.
Every dollar raised will help ease this transition and bring my dad closer to the stability, comfort, and healing he so greatly deserves after an unimaginably hard year.
If you are unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser means more than you know. Thank you for your kindness, support, and for helping our family take this next step forward.
With gratitude,
the Rivet family
